How To Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint

How to make sidewalk chalk paint Pinterest pin

Turn your old broken sidewalk chalk pieces into sidewalk chalk PAINT with this easy tutorial!

Sidewalk chalk is fun… but sidewalk chalk paint is funner!

Just like with crayons, kids are always breaking sidewalk chalk! And when they use it down and there are just little nubs left, it gets so hard to use.

Don’t throw those little pieces away, let me show you how easy it is to turn into paint.

DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Supplies Needed

  • Sidewalk Chalk
  • A Plastic Bag for each color
  • Water
  • A rolling pin or wood kitchen mallet (or a smooth rock)

Step 1. Smash The Chalk

Separate the chalk into like colors, and place them into bags.

Zip up the bags and then use a rolling pin to smash up the chalk.

Keep pounding it until it breaks down into little tiny pieces, and then roll over it until it makes a powder.

If you do this on your concrete outside, you might break holes into your plastic bag, so maybe use one to smash, and then pour it into another for the next step.

Step 2. Mix The Paint

After the chalk is totally powdered, mix in some water until it is paintable and not too thick.

But you don’t want it to be too watered down either, or the colors won’t be as bright.

Step 3. Paint!

Using large paintbrushes, dip them into the chalk paint mixture and then paint onto the sidewalk!

When the paint it wet it is looks darker than it will end up. Wait for it to dry to see how the colors look!

You can even paint on rocks, and my kids also tried to paint some leaves.

That’s it! This is a great summer’s day activity and a fun way to use up those old chalk pieces instead of throwing them away!

To clean up, just use water to spray it off like with regular chalk.

I hope you enjoy this activity!
